Free Online CDC Environmental Health Courses Available

- CDC's Environmental Health Services Branch, in collaboration with the National Environmental Health Association (NEHA), is providing three free online training courses for EH practitioners and students: Environmental Health Training in Emergency Response, National Environmental Public Health Performance Standards (NEPHPS), and Biology and Control of Insects and Rodents. NEHA is providing automatic continuing education credit to NEHA-credentialed individuals for those successful passing each of the courses and course completion certificates for all others. Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Laboratory Fellowships

- The Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) Laboratory Fellowship Program, sponsored by APHL and CDC, trains and prepares scientists for careers in public health laboratories and supports public health initiatives related to infectious disease research. The EID Advanced Laboratory Training Fellowship is a one-year program designed for bachelor's or master's level scientists, with emphasis on the practical application of technologies, methodologies and practices related to emerging infectious diseases. The EID Laboratory Research Fellowship is a two-year program designed for doctoral level (PhD, MD or DVM) scientists to conduct high-priority infectious diseases research.

New Council on Linkages Website Includes Information on Updating the Core Competencies and Mapping
- For 16 years the Council Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, a coalition of representatives from 17 national organizations, has worked to further academic/practice collaboration to assure a well-trained, competent workforce and a strong, evidence-based public health infrastructure. After a one year hiatus, the Council is back with new funding provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. New projects include working to update the Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals and mapping the public health workforce pipeline.

- The Asia Pacific Action Alliance on Human Resources for Health (AAAH) is a response to international recognition of the need for global and regional action to strengthen country planning and action on health workforce system. As of January 2007 it has 15 members including Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, PNG, Philippines, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 5 priority actions for the first two years including: HRH advocacy, information monitoring, capacity strengthening, knowledge generation, and technical coordination.

Public Health Training Centers: Six Years Progress in Public Health Workforce Development

- A review of the Public Health Training Centers (PHTC), a program developed for the purpose of improving the nation's public health system by strengthening the technical, scientific, managerial and leadership competence of the current and future public health workforce. It emphasizes development of the existing workforce as a foundation for improving the nation's public health infrastructure, and for achieving Healthy People 2010 Objectives, a set of health objectives for the nation to achieve over the next decade.
