Certification and Credentialing

  • ASPH Certification in Public Health (CPH) Study Guide - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - Study Guide developed by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) to assist candidates in preparing for the Certification in Public Health (CPH) examination.
  • Certified in Public Health (CPH) Webinars - (National Board of Public Health Examiners)  - Webinars and handouts that provide preparation tips and information about taking the Certified in Public Health Exam.
  • National Board of Public Health Examiners (NBPHE) - (National Board of Public Health Examiners)  - The NBPHE is an independent organization established to ensure that students and graduates from schools and programs of public health have mastered the knowledge and skills relevant to contemporary public health. NBPHE administers the nation's only core credential for public health professionals, Certified in Public Health (CPH). The CPH examination to become a certified public health professional is held every August.
  • National Environmental Health Association Credentialing - (National Environmental Health Association (NEHA))  - Environmental health credentials offered by NEHA that evidence mastery of specialized knowledge in environmental health, wastewater treatment, food safety, healthy homes, and hazardous substances.

Competencies

  • Applied Epidemiology Competencies - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE))  - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE) developed the Competencies for Applied Epidemiologists in Governmental Public Health Agencies (Applied Epidemiology Competencies or AECs for short) to improve the practice of epidemiology within the public health system.
  • Competencies for Applied Epidemiologists in Governmental Public Health Agencies - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE))  - The Competencies for Applied Epidemiologists in Governmental Public Health Agencies (Applied Epidemiology Competencies, or AECs) were created in collaboration with the Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE).
  • Core Competencies for Public Health Professionals - (Council on Linkages Between Academia and Public Health Practice, Public Health Foundation (PHF))  - The Core Public Health Competencies are a set of skills desirable for the broad practice of public health, reflecting the characteristics that staff of public health organizations may want to possess as they work to protect and promote health in the community (i.e., deliver the Essential Public Health Services).
  • Genomic Competencies for the Public Health Workforce - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The purpose of this activity is to present essential public health competencies that incorporate specific aspects of genomics and present the required core knowledge, skills, abilities, and crosscutting functions related to public health programs.
  • MPH Core Competency Development Project - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - Core competencies for the master of public health degree (MPH) in graduate schools and programs of public health. The 12 core domains and 119 competencies can serve as a resource for faculty and students for enhancing the quality and accountability of graduate public health education and training.
  • Multidisciplinary Environmental Health Provider Competencies - (West Virginia Rural Health Research Center)  - Describes a study that seeks to develop a competency guide that will address competencies that are essential for providing environmentally conscious care. After existing standards have been identified from multiple entities, a national consensus conference will be convened to identify competencies that are common across professions and disciplines, and to develop a Multidisciplinary Environmental Health Provider Competency Guide.
  • Project Public Health Ready: Workforce Competency Development - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - Public health workers must be able to identify their roles in emergencies and demonstrate competency in basic public health emergency preparedness and response functions. Project Public Health Ready competencies reflect the knowledge, skills, and abilities useful in real-world public health practice.
  • Public Health Informatics Competencies - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Competencies to enable public health professionals to leverage the power of modern information technology in the science and practice of public health.
  • Public Health Preparedness and Response Core Competency Model - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - Final core competency model that provides a national framework for competency-based curricula and training and for performance benchmarks to measure public health preparedness and response.

Accreditation and Performance

  • Accreditation and Performance Improvement Guide - (Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO))  - Guide to assist state, territorial, and tribal health agencies in preparing for national accreditation and conducting performance assessment and improvement activities.
  • ASTHO Accreditation and Performance - (Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO))  - ASTHO supports the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) in its development of a voluntary national accreditation program for state, local, territorial, and tribal health agencies. ASTHO provides technical assistance to states preparing for accreditation and improving the performance of their health agencies.
  • Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships - MAPP - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - MAPP is a community-wide strategic planning tool for improving community health. Facilitated by public health leadership, this tool helps communities prioritize public health issues and identify resources for addressing them.
  • NACCHO Accreditation Preparation - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - Information and tools for local public health departments to prepare and apply for public health accreditation..
  • Public Health Accreditation Board - (Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB))  - Provides information about a national voluntary accreditation program for state, local, territorial and tribal public health departments. The goal of the accreditation program is to improve and protect the health of every community by advancing the quality and performance of public health departments.
  • Public Health Improvement Resource Center - (Public Health Foundation (PHF))  - Searchable online database of resources and tools aimed to build better public health systems. The resources support efforts to improve performance management and quality improvement, community health information and data systems, accreditation preparation, and workforce development.

  • Environmental Public Health Performance Standards - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Set of standards that describe the optimal performance and capacity for environmental public health systems and programs, which complement the National Public Health Performance Standards.
  • National Public Health Performance Standards Program (NPHPSP) - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - National Partnership initiative that has developed National Public Health Performance Standards for state and local public health systems and for public health governing bodies to support performance assessment and systems improvement.
  • PHAB Standards & Measures - (Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB))  - Official standards and measures required for national public health department accreditation. The document provides guidance for public health departments preparing for accreditation.

  • Performance Improvement Technical Assistance Teleconference Series - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - Teleconference series on local health department (LHD) performance improvement including accreditation, community health assessment and improvement planning processes, and Mobilizing for Action through Planning and Partnerships.

  • Credentials for Success - (Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University)  - The Credentials for success is a distance learning program for Georgia's public health practitioners.
  • Epidemic Intelligence Service - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) is the country's critical epidemiology training service, combating the causes of major epidemics.
  • Kansas WALD Center - (University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita)  - The Kansas Public Health Workforce and Leadership Development (WALD) Center is a web-based public health education, training, and research center. The WALD Center makes use of technology to foster social capital and increase workforce capacity among Kansas's public health workers.
  • National Laboratory Training Network - (Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) U.S., Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The National Laboratory Training Network (NLTN) is a collaborative training system of the Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Its mission is to improve laboratory practice of public health significance through quality continuing education.
  • National Public Health Training Center Network - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA))  - Partnerships between schools of public health, related academic institutions, and public health agencies and organizations. The PHTC Network improves the Nation's public health system by strengthening the technical, scientific, managerial and leadership competence of current and future public health professionals.
  • PHF Quality Improvement (QI) Quick Guide - (Public Health Foundation (PHF))  - The QI Quick Guide provides an introduction to quality improvement (QI) and a gateway to resources that public health professionals can use to pursue QI initiatives within their organizations.
  • PHF's Quality Improvement Learning Series Catalog - (Public Health Foundation (PHF))  - Learning series to provide public health agencies and organizations with a wide variety of Quality Improvement programs, tools and techniques which they will need to be successful in the implementation and expansion of Quality Improvement.
  • Project Public Health Ready - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - Project Public Health Ready (PPHR) is a collaborative activity between NACCHO and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Project aims to fully integrate Local health departments (LHDs) into the response community and prepared to respond to any health and medical emergency in partnership with community-based organizations.

  • APHL Fellowships - (Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) U.S.)  - Fellowship and traineeship programs that prepare students for careers in public health laboratories and support specialized training for practicing scientists.
  • CDC Public Health Associate Program (PHAP) - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Competitive, two-year, paid fellowship within the CDC. Public Health Associates are assigned to state, tribal, local and territorial public health agencies.
  • CDC Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - Two-year applied, competency-based training program for professionals with education and experience in information and computer science and technology and public health or health care.

  • Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Public Health Informatics Fellowship Program (PHIFP) is a 2-year applied fellowship for professionals with a master's or higher degree. Professionals are trained to apply information science and technology to the practice of public health.
  • Public Health Prevention Service Fellowship - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Public Health Prevention Service (PHPS) is a 3-year training and service fellowship for master's level public health professionals. The fellowship focuses on public health program management and provides experience in program planning, implementation, and evaluation through specialized hands-on training and mentorship at CDC, and in state and local health agencies.
  • RWJF Scholars, Fellows & Leadership Programs - (Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF))  - Scholarship, fellowship, and leadership programs in the fields of medical research, nursing, health policy, and nonprofit leadership.
  • SOPHE / ATSDR Student Fellowship in Environmental Health Promotion - (Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE))  - This fellowship is designed to recognize, assist and train students working on research or practice-based projects in environmental health education/health promotion or environmental justice from the perspective of health education or the behavioral sciences.
  • SOPHE Health Education & Health Promotion Internship - (Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE))  - The Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) provides leadership to the profession of health education and health promotion.   • Advanced Practice Centers - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - NACCHO and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Center for Public Health Preparedness host a series of webinars yearly featuring eight training programs. The live online seminars are designed for NACCHO members, public health preparedness staff, and anyone interested in public health preparedness issues.
  • New York Consortium for Emergency Preparedness Continuing Education - (New York Consortium for Emergency Preparedness Continuing Education (NYCEPCE) USA)  - The mission of the NYCEPCE is to extend and strengthen the competency of health professionals in New York State and New York City to respond effectively to emergency events of all kinds.
  • PHF Learning Resource Center - (Public Health Foundation (PHF))  - Quality training materials for public health, healthcare, and allied health professionals at an affordable price. The materials include information in such areas as preparedness; immunization; epidemiology; diabetes; infectious diseases; performance management; asthma and allergies; and health disparities.
  • Rapid Response Training: The Role of Public Health in a Multi-Agency Response to Avian Influenza - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Council of State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE))  - Course materials presented at regional trainings provide a standardized curriculum to state and local public health responders about how to identify and control human infections and illness associated with avian influenza A (H5N1). Users can download free course materials including presentations, case studies, and tabletop exercises and adapt them to meet the training and preparedness needs of individual state health agencies.
  • Supercourse: Epidemiology, the Internet and Global Health - (University of Pittsburgh)  - Supercourse is a global repository of lectures on public health and prevention targeting educators across the world. Supercourse has a network of over 43435 scientists in 175 countries who are sharing for free a library of 3418 lectures in 26 languages.
  • Workforce Solutions Webinars - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - NACCHO offers online webinars/webcasts which feature local health department staff speaking on a variety of issues.

Leadership Training

  • CDC Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Environmental Public Health Leadership Institute (EPHLI) is a 1-year program of seminars and workshops, special projects, and individual study for practicing environmental public health professionals. CDC will pay all allowable and approved costs associated with participation in the institute.
  • Management Academy for Public Health - (University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Public Health)  - The Management Academy for Public Health prepares teams of health professionals for new management challenges in community health. MAPH is a nine-month executive education course customized for health managers in the public health system.
  • National Leadership Academy for the Public's Health (NLAPH) - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Public Health Foundation (PHF))  - The National Leadership Academy for the Public's Health (NLAPH) is an applied approach to leadership training that brings together leaders from public health, healthcare, and community organizations to work towards improving a specific, measurable public health problem within their communities while also receiving leadership training and technical assistance from national experts. The application deadline is February 3, 2012.
  • National Public Health Leadership Institute - (University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Public Health)  - The new PHLI is a one-year leadership development program for high-potential leaders with a commitment to leading in their own organizations and communities, but also leading system change on the national scene.
  • Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship: Developing Public Health Leaders - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The CDC Preventive Medicine Residency (PMR) is a 12-month program meeting the Practicum Year training requirements for certification by the American Board of Preventive Medicine (ABPM) in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine. The PMR is designed to prepare physicians for future leadership roles in public health at federal, state, and local levels.

  • Survive and Thrive: Roadmap for New Local Health Officials - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - Learning opportunity designed to enhance the skills of new local health officials. Fellows gain practical tools and tactics to help engage elected officials and community partners; manage strategic planning and human, financial, and information resources; and resolve challenges unique to local health officials.

Legislative Action

  • Public Health Preparedness Workforce Development Act of 2007 (Bill # S.1882) - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - NACCHO serves as an advocate for the bill, which would amend the Public Health Service Act to establish various programs for the recruitment and retention of public health workers and eliminate critical public health workforce shortages in Federal, State, local, and tribal public health agencies.

Meetings, Summits, Councils, or Conferences

  • ASPH Practice Coordinators - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - The council serves to advise the deans and engage the faculty and member schools on public health practice activities. It provides a forum for the discussion of policies and programs to promote, improve and strengthen public health practice.
  • Continuing Professional Education Council - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - The Council on Continuing Professional Education serves to advise on policy matters regarding continuing education activities and workforce development at the Schools of Public Health.
  • Virginia Recruitment and Retention Collaborative Team - (Virginia Department of Health (VDH) USA)  - The mission of the Virginia Recruitment and Retention Collaborative team is to establish and enhance collaborative efforts in partnership with stakeholders to deliver improvements in recruitment processes and retention systems for health care providers with an emphasis on medically under served areas in Virginia.

International Efforts

  • Africa Health Workforce Observatory - (World Health Organization (WHO))  - The Africa Health Workforce Observatory promotes, develops and sustains the knowledge base for human resources for health in the African region to provide evidence for informed health policy decisions in order to strengthen health systems to provide more effective and efficient health service delivery.
  • Asia Pacific Action Alliance on Human Resources for Health (AAAH) - (World Health Organization (WHO))  - The Asia Pacific Action Alliance on Human Resources for Health (AAAH) is a response to international recognition of the need for global and regional action to strengthen country planning and action on health workforce system. As of January 2007 it has 15 members including Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Myanmar, Nepal, PNG, Philippines, Samoa, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 5 priority actions for the first two years including: HRH advocacy, information monitoring, capacity strengthening, knowledge generation, and technical coordination.
  • European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies - (World Health Organization (WHO))  - The European Observatory on Health Systems and Policies supports and promotes evidence-based health policy-making through comprehensive and rigorous analysis of the dynamics of health care systems in Europe.
  • Global Forum on Human Resources for Health - (Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA))  - The first Global Forum on Human Resources for Health was held in Kampala, Uganda from 2-7 March, 2008. It called for immediate and sustained action to resolve the critical shortage of health workers around the world.
  • Global Health Workforce Alliance - (Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA))  - The Global Health Workforce Alliance is a partnership dedicated to identifying and implementing solutions to the health workforce crisis. It brings together a variety of actors, including national governments, civil society, finance institutions, workers, international agencies, academic institutions and professional associations. The Alliance is hosted and administered by the World Health Organization.
  • Health Worker Migration Policy Initiative - (Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA))  - The Health Worker Migration Policy Initiative is dedicated to monitoring the health worker flows and issue recommendations to WHO for an International Code of Practice.
  • Health Workforce Advocacy Initiative - (Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA))  - The Health Workforce Advocacy Initiative (HWAI) is dedicated to keeping human resources for health at the top of the agenda at the country, regional and international level. Chaired by Eric Friedman (PHR), this initiative's purpose is to make the case for the policies and sustained investments necessary to develop and empower a health workforce capable of delivering on health goals.
  • Scaling up Education & Training Task Force - (Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA))  - The Scaling up Education & Training Task Force is a technical working group that is looking at finding evidence of previous scale-up initiatives around the world and how best to replicate these examples on a larger scale.
  • Task Force on Financing Human Resources for Health - (Global Health Workforce Alliance (GHWA))  - A new international task force that will address how to finance the scaling up of the health workforce in the developing world. The group of experts will focus on helping governments identify their funding needs, finding ways to make more money available and on advising countries how best to spend it.

New Workers Development Programs

  • APHL Recognition Program - (Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) U.S.)  - APHL's Awards Program highlights some of the outstanding achievements in laboratory science and creative approaches being made to solve today's public health challenges. The award listing includes the Thomas E. Maxson Education, Training and Workforce Development Award.
  • Center for Health Policy at Columbia University - (Columbia University School of Nursing USA)  - The Center for Health Policy works with leading researchers at the Columbia University School of Nursing to build a competent workforce for successful public health systems and practice.
  • Environmental Health Traineeship and Fellowship Programs - (Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) U.S.)  - The programs provide travel for current laboratory staff to attend relevant conferences or trainings, or short-term (1-6 week) specialized training in environmental health technology and testing methods at another state health department, NCEH/CDC, or other state or federal agencies (such as ATSDR, EPA, NIEHS or NIOSH).
  • Epidemiology Elective Program - (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC))  - The Epidemiology Program Office (EPO) of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) offers an elective in epidemiology for senior medical and veterinary students. The purpose of the elective is to provide an introduction to preventive medicine, public health and the principles of applied epidemiology.
  • National Mentoring Program in Public Health - (American Public Health Association (APHA))  - The National Mentoring Program in Public Health is a project of the APHA Student Assembly. The program pairs public health students and recent graduates with knowledgeable public health professionals.
  • National PHTC Network Publications - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - In coordination with ASPH, the National Public Health Training Centers Network develops publications, with active participation of the Centers, to educate practitioners and policymakers on the innovative and successful foundational workforce training that are conducted across the 14 PHTC.

Tools/Resources

  • Career Resource Guide for Uniformed Services Environmental Health Practitioners icon - (Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) U.S.)  - The Career Resource Guide for Uniformed Services Environmental Health Practitioners was designed and created by the Uniformed Services Environmental Public Health Careers Work Group. The primary goal of the work group is to assist Uniformed Services environmental health practitioners who are retiring or otherwise leaving active duty service in transitioning to postmilitary careers.
  • CAUSE | EFFECT Public Health Student Recruitment Video - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - Video to build awareness about careers and degree programs in public health by showcasing real people who use their degrees and experience to protect and promote the health of all.
  • Centralized Application Service (CAS) - (Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH))  - SOPHAS, the Schools of Public Health Application Service, was launched in July 2006 and is now available at: www.sophas.org. SOPHAS was developed by ASPH and a CAS Advisory Committee which is comprised of admissions directors and associate deans from the majority of schools of public health.
  • Health Workforce Information Center (HWIC) - (Center for Rural Health at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences)  - The Health Workforce Information Center is a comprehensive online library that provides access to health workforce programs, funding sources, data, research, policy, and educational opportunities.
  • International Centre for Human Resources in Nursing - (Florence Nightingale International Foundation (FNIF), International Council of Nurses (ICN))  - The International Centre for Human Resources in Nursing (ICHRN) was established in 2006 by the International Council of Nurses and its premier foundation, the Florence Nightingale International Foundation. The Centre is dedicated to strengthening the nursing workforce globally through the development, ongoing monitoring and dissemination of comprehensive information, standards and tools on nursing human resources policy, management, research and practice.
  • NACCHO Model Practice Database - (National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO))  - Online, searchable collection of practices across public health areas.
